Neighborhood Awareness for Volunteers

Purpose:
To help maintain a safe, secure, and supportive environment for all members living at the Friendly Home.

Key Volunteer Responsibilities

  • Use only approved entrances and exits when entering or leaving the neighborhoods.
  • If in memory care (Lee Place) please ensure doors close and latch securely behind you.
  • Memory Care is not to be used as a passageway or shortcut to access other areas of the facility.
  • Be aware of members near exit doors and never allow anyone to follow you through a secured door.
  • Notify staff immediately if you observe a member outside their designated neighborhood who may require assistance, particularly in or around Lee Place.
  • Volunteers must never assist a member who has fallen or perform transfers to or from a wheelchair, bed, or other seating. Notify staff immediately for assistance.

Member Safety

  • Remain aware of members who may appear confused or attempt to leave the unit.
  • Redirect gently and notify staff if assistance is needed.
  • Never physically restrain a member.
  • Report any concerns, including:
    • Falls or injuries
    • Exit-seeking or wandering behaviors
    • Significant behavioral changes
    • Safety or environmental hazards

Remember: Memory Care units are secured to protect members. Volunteers play an important role in maintaining a safe environment by staying alert, following procedures, and notifying staff of concerns.
