Older Americans Month – Powered by Connections

“Connection is why we’re here. It is what gives purpose and meaning to our lives.” ~ Brene Brown

Every year in May, we celebrate Older Americans Month! This year’s theme is Powered by Connections, focusing on the profound impact that meaningful connections have on the well-being and health of the Members, Residents and Patients we are so honored to serve.

Many older adults who live in the Friendly Senior Living communities have lost those meaningful connections that they had built throughout their lives. Together, we can create and build new connections with them. I encourage everyone to take a few minutes to spend some time chatting with seniors. You never know what kinds of connections might be discovered. Just recently, I was chatting with one of our Members and found out that she was great friends with my grandparents and used to babysit my stepdad! Another Member moved to the Friendly Home from where I was born, and was best friends with the principal of the elementary school I attended.

In keeping with the theme of Older Americans Month this year, Friendly Home staff and Members talked about what they had in common with one another, finding ways they could connect through life experiences, hobbies, activities, places they have lived, professions and more. We are showcasing some of those special connections between Members and other Members, as well as between Members and staff. If you happen to be visiting the Friendly Home during May, be sure to stop by the Member Art Gallery and see some of these amazing connections that we discovered within the Friendly Home! And remember, the most important things in life are the connections you make with others.
