Whether it’s cocktail hour, neighborhood visits or in the Friendly Gift Shop, on Thursdays you are likely to find Maggie spending time with Friendly Home Members! This senior nursing student and St. John Fisher College Service Scholar is a committed volunteer who loves to make our Members happy. “One of the Members is a real spitfire. She’s hilarious!” says Maggie. “I love it that she refers to me as ‘my friend Maggie.’”
“It’s also great that the Members introduce me to their families. I get to know them and the simple pleasures that make them happy. I really enjoy coming here; it’s a great way to end my week!” Maggie says. She believes that her time here and lessons learned will be very beneficial in her future career.
For Maggie, volunteerism runs in the family. Her older brother also volunteered at the Friendly Home, and Maggie herself started volunteering at the age of six. Maggie explains, “Volunteering is a huge part of my life; it has shaped who I am. And you don’t even realize that it is happening while you are doing it!”
