Celebrating National Assisted Living Week at Glenmere

National Assisted Living Week is September 13 through 19.  This nation-wide observance celebrates what makes Assisted Living unique and wonderful and, while it is a Glenmere-wide celebration, the activities department takes the lead in designing specific programs and events.  The theme for 2015 is “Nourishing Life: Mind, Body, Spirit.” Glenmere Assisted Living, a part of Friendly Senior Living, in Pittsford, NY, takes a holistic approach to celebrating Assisted Living Week by providing an opportunity for all staff members to participate in a variety of activities with the Assisted Living and Memory Care residents.

Last year’s theme was Music which provided a specific focus for programs but this year’s theme is broader and took some planning on the part of the activities staff!  We looked at our existing activities and what we consider nourishing to the mind, body, and spirit – intergenerational programs for the spirit, Wii fitness to exercise the body, and trivia to stimulate the mind.  Then we added in a few new-to-us offerings that fit in with the Nourishing theme. This year we will be working on a craft with employees’ children, a Wii Bowling tournament with staff, hand lotion making with chair massages, a Jeopardy tournament (also with staff) and then our grand finale – Yoga, Meditation, and a Happy Celebration!
