Our People: Our Most Important Asset

Human Resources is not just about payroll, policies, procedures, and benefits. The most important aspect of HR has always been and remains the people.  But you can’t just say “our employees are our most important assets,” you have to show it.  With today’s changes in the workplace and the ongoing economic news, it is easy to lose sight of what makes The Friendly Home “friendly”: our employees, visitors and volunteers.  Just as it takes a “community” of family, friends and neighbors to raise a child, it also takes a “community” of family, friends and reliable, respectful, compassionate employees to care for those who need assistance in their senior years.

Every year, The Friendly Home applauds employees’ service with an “Employee Recognition and Service” Awards breakfast, lunch and dinner.  This event is to say “thank you” to our employees who have dedicated their lives and career to the care of our Members.  In 2012, LeadingAge www.leadingageny.org recognized at their annual conference several Friendly Home employees for their years of service dedicated to long-term care.  Some of the recipients included:

  • Sue Archetko, Lead Dining Services Associate, employed at The Friendly Home for 42 years,
  • Kathleen Pierson, Production Cook, employed at The Friendly Home for 41 years,
  • Janet Tiefel, Recreation Director, employed at The Friendly Home for 33 years,
  • Gary French, Security Guard, employed at The Friendly Home for 33 years,
  • Tim Mahoney, Maintenance Mechanic, employed at The Friendly Home for 33 years,
  • Deborah Polowchak, Lead Dining Services Associate, employed at The Friendly Home for 32 years,
  • Eunice Blocksdorf, CNA, employed at The Friendly Home for 31 years,
  • Elizabeth (Mary) Howard, LPN, employed at The Friendly Home for 31 years,
  • James Dewhirst, President/CEO, employed at The Friendly Home for 31 years,
  • Ann Menihan, Receptionist, employed at The Friendly Home for 31 years
  • Kim Doty, Environmental Services Assistant, employed at The Friendly Home for 30 years,
  • Jane Safran, LPN, employed at The Friendly Home for 30 years.

The above names are just a handful of employees who give their best every day to serving our Members, their families and visitors.  At The Friendly Home, which employs 292 full-time and part-time staff – 102 (35%) have been with us 10 years or more and 53 (18%) have been here for 5 years or more.

We are thankful to all of our employees for everything they do so very well every day, naturally!
